Kerry led the bay Thoroughbred filly out to the pool area. She hosed Passion off before hand to ensure that dirt didn't clog the filters from the filly's feet, or anywhere else. After Passion was wet and cleaned off, Kerry led the filly up the ramp and into the pool while Kerry took the stairs, holding the leadrop over the plexiglass railing. She led Passion into the water, but instead of easing her way into the pool, Passion plunged forward with a gigantic splash, nearly yanking the leadrope from Kerry's hands. Passion's head popped up out of the water with a misty explosion of exhaled breath, like a whale gasping for air through it's blowhole.
Passion began swimming, legs churning like pistons. Her nostrils were clenched shut aside from the occaisional gasp for breath, and her ears were flattened against her skull to keep water from getting in the delicate orifices. Her forelock was plastered against her skull.
Kerry led her slowly, making sure the filly swam at a pace she was capable of. She wanted to get some exhertion in there, which was the point of the excercise. Passion kept swimming, her neck cranking forward with each stroke as she made an effort to pull her 1200 pound frame through the water. After about fourty-five minutes of this, Passion finally found herself able to touch the ground, and she began to lunge out of there. Kerry found herself having to jog to keep up, since she really was not in the position to try to pull back. As Passion practically crawled her way out of there and skittered down the ramp, her wet, shod hooves unable to really get very good traction on the wet mat.
"Easy, easy, easy!" Kerry said, trying to calm the filly as she charged out of the water.
Passion was out and Kerry led her away, taking the sweatscraper to scrape the water off her coat, then walked her out so that she caught her breath. At this point, Passion's nostrils flared in and out. Kerry walked her until her breathing and pulse returned to normal before leading her back to the barn.
