Kerry guided Kiko out onto the track, posting to the stallion's trot. Her stirrups were jacked up higher than she was used to, being a jumper, but she was dead set on proving that she could do this. Nothing was going to stop her from giving this job her all.
Kiko tossed his head, chewing at the bit relentlessly as foam spilled from his mouth and flecked against his chest. His head was up and his ears alert. He was ready to go. Kerry could feel him bunching up like a coiled spring beneath her.
Pulling the goggles over her blue eyes, Kerry gathered the reins in her hands, standing in the stirrup as she allowed Kiko to break into a canter. Her body rocked back in forth in rhythm with the stallion's stride. Kiko dropped his head, digging into the dirt as heavily as he could, dying to pick up a faster speed. After a couple furlongs, and as they came to the last three furlongs, Kerry let him out... not too much but enough so that he got to run a bit. She didn't want to burn him out before his next race. She hunkered over his neck as he dug in even further, his ears flattened against his skull. Although Kerry was holding him back, she could see each quarter pole whizzing by as well as landscape. They finally finished and Kerry stood up in the stirrups, pulling him back. Kiko rocked back and forth in frustration, at first unwilling to slow his pace, but he eventually gave in and slowed to a trot.
"What a good boy," She murmered. She still had yet to breeze him a bit. But before hand, she cooled him out a bit, letting him catch his breath, which didn't seem like it would take long at all.
